美國參眾兩院在前日（6日）舉行會議，確認選舉人團票，期間有特朗普支持者闖入國會大樓，會議一度暫停。英國首相約翰遜事後譴責特朗普，批評他煽動市民闖入國會「完全錯誤（completely wrong）」，歡迎國會確認拜登勝出，「民主獲彰顯（democracy has prevailed）」。

約翰遜當地時間 7 日在首相府舉行記者會，期間被問到特朗普是否應為示威者闖入國會負責。約翰遜表示，特朗普曾鼓勵市民衝擊國會，亦不斷質疑一個自由、公平選舉的結果，形容特朗普的做法完全錯誤。約翰遜亦稱，毫無保留地譴責特朗普（unreservedly condemn），認為他鼓勵民眾在國會作出可恥行為。

約翰遜亦在其 Twitter 發文，形容美國代表著世界的民主，認為目前最重要是和平有序交接總統權力。

特朗普曾於去年 12 月，在 Twitter 呼籲民眾參與昨日在華府的大型抗議，並稱現場將會十分狂野。

至前日，有示威者衝擊國會大樓，副總統彭斯及議員則撤至安全地點暫避。現場一片混亂，警方曾施放催淚彈驅散示威者，一名女子在現場遭警方擊斃。
