有人說，大學校園變成了一座大監獄。

去年 9 月，當時中大學生會在原定開學禮當天於「百萬大道」自發舉辦「全港罷課集會」，來自不同院校、數以千計學生佔滿整條大道，叫喊抗爭口號直至日落。
今年，肺炎疫情一波接一波，各間大學未能恢復面授課堂，中大「百萬大道」的空氣只剩下冷清。
社運初期的校長關懷
去年 6 月 12 日，10 間大學校長首次就反修例風波發表
聯合聲明；在社運初期，多名校長對參與抗爭、疑受警暴的學生表達關懷及同理心，例如教大校長張仁良曾眼泛淚光，對年輕人受傷及被捕表示傷痛，去信倡林鄭月娥撤回修訂；嶺大校長鄭國漢也應學生邀請到達「光復元朗」遊行現場視察。
抗爭運動的中期，中大學生吳傲雪向校長段崇智公開自己拘留期間遭受警員性暴力經歷，段崇智另在閉門會面中擁抱一名崩潰的黑衣蒙面學生，段落淚指自己非常想幫助學生。10 月 18 日，段崇智依承諾發
公開信，形容部分警員涉嫌不當使用暴力或違反人權，「經查證後須予以譴責」。
11 月 4 日早上，科大學生周梓樂在將軍澳尚德停車墮樓重傷，墮樓前疑曾被警員追趕及延誤送治，周在同月 8 日不治，當天原是科大畢業禮，科大校長史維在頒授學位期間收到消息，先後兩度中斷儀式，並一度落淚。
2019 年 7 月 27 日，嶺南大學校長鄭國漢應學生之邀，下午到達元朗朗屏站，視察遊行。
2019 年 11 月 12 日，中文大學校長段崇智曾到中大衝突現場「二號橋」與警察交涉。

史維要求當局就周梓樂逝世作「徹底和獨立」的調查，更點名警方最需要回應，“ We demand a thorough and independent investigation into the death of our student… We demand clarifications from all parties – especially from the police… We will be outraged if there is no acceptable explanation offered to us. ”
2019 年 11 月 8 日，科大生周梓樂傷重不治，有科大學生於校內悼念，在木板上寫著：「周同學我們會代你走下去」及高舉「悼念周同學」字牌。
港大校長張翔、浸大校長錢大康同於 11 月初表示，將與學生展開對話，正當大學生似乎迎來期待已久的溝通機會，在 11 月 11 日，全港「黎明行動」的第一顆催淚煙在中大校園爆開一剎，大學高層態度似乎開始轉往不一樣的方向。
十一月的火與彈藥
2019 年 11 月 12 日，中文大學發生警民衝突，為大學變成抗爭陣線掀開序幕。校長段崇智曾在衝突前到爭議地「二號橋」調停，但未能阻止衝突爆發，二橋充斥汽油彈火光、藍色水、橡膠子彈及催淚煙；校外人士試圖「圍魏救趙」營救，戰線延至理大、港大、浸大、城大等院校。
中大保衛戰歷時五日，期間校園內堆滿抗爭物資，更傳言有土製炸彈。段崇智 14 日發表聲明，指大學非用作解決政治紛爭，亦非製造武器、使用武力的戰場：翌日，段態度再轉強硬，除了譴責示威者，亦首次威脅或報警求助。
九間大學校長同日晚上發表聯合聲明，強調當時極其複雜而艱難的困局，並非由大學造成，要求政府牽頭聯合社會各界，以具體行動化解。最終，中大所有示威者於 11 月 15 日撤離。
中大過後，理工大學成為下一個大型衝突地點。理大示威者以校園為掩護而堵塞紅隧，16 日晚上衝突越演越烈，示威者持盾抵擋警方水炮，汽油彈與催淚彈在街頭橫飛。18 日，理大內示威者反被警方圍困，直至 29 日，警方才撤走了理大校園的封鎖線，理大早已人去樓空。
2019 年 11 月 17 日，理工大學示威者與警方再在漆咸道南爆發激烈衝突，展開多輪汽油彈、催淚彈「攻防戰」；警方下午發射水炮驅散示威者。
圍城後的大學自主
這個 11 月後，大學似乎不一樣了。
今年 6 月，五間大學校長發表聯合聲明，稱理解就《國安法》立法的必要性，當中聯署人除了理大滕錦光及港大張翔，還有曾經視察元朗遊行的嶺大鄭國漢、擁抱學生落淚的中大段崇智、以及去信林鄭要求撤回修例的教大張仁良。
校長們的聲明中，再見不到「對話」、「協商」或「聆聽」；高舉的是「一國兩制」、「基本法」及「國家安全」。
我們完全支持「一國兩制」，理解訂立國家安全法的必要性，並珍惜基本法所保障的言論、新聞、出版及集會自由等權利。
五間大學校長聯署聲明
曾經，手中拿著「光復香港，時代革命」旗幟的「新民主女神像」在香港各間大學巡迴展出。一年後，與很多東西一樣，大學裡再沒有容下她的空間。
2020 年 6 月 12 日，「新民女神像」於理工大學公開展覽。
相隔一日，理大校方在未知會學生會情況下，突然安排保安抬走「新民女神像」，搬運期間造成嚴重破壞。
港大正式解僱任教超過 20 年的法律系副教授兼「佔中」發起人戴耀廷，同涉佔中案的立法會議員邵家臻亦不獲浸大續約。戴耀廷接受
《立場新聞》專訪中形容，「香港自治已死，法治已死，學術自由已死」。
大學生運動亦舉步維艱，城大以「帳目不清、財政管理不善」為由，新學年起拒絕為學生會代收會費，被指以行政手段打壓學生會；港大、中大、浸大學生會先後披露，警察多次在沒有搜查令及展示警員編號下，進入各校校園範圍；中大學生會一度就此申請禁制令，但被拒。
今年 7 月，理大學生會突然收到警方搜查令，要求就一宗襲警案進入學生會室搜證，帶走 5 部電腦。
去年 11 月「理大衝突」期間，有人以箭射向警員；警方今年 7 月持手令到理工大學範圍進行搜查，帶走學生會 5 部電腦及要求取得「箭會會員名單」。
也許，師生們將驀然發現，原來他們從未離開圍城。
